Greater Flamingos
What is a famous bird you see at the zoo a lot? The correct answer is a Greater Flamingo, also known as Phoenicopterus which is the flamingos scientific name. The Greater Flamingo has an unusual anatomy, graceful habitat, and a strange but beautiful way of moving around to make this odd yet graceful bird.
The Greater Flamingo regularly live in marshy areas; seas, marshes, and lakes. "Found in America from the Bahamas, Tierra del Fuego including the Galapagos Island and the Old World from southern Europe to south Africa across India."(Aller 923) In the marshy areas of their habitat they build nest out of mud, grass, and twigs they find to make a strong nest for the females eggs. Greater Flamingos get their radiant rosy color from the pigments in organisms they eat. Pink feathers are not the only colored feathers there are, under the rosy feathers they have some black under feathers. Let's not forget that they have some very strange legs, flamingos legs are like sticks that can bend and can hold up to thirty-eight pounds of pressure. With those long stick legs their height adds up to around four feet tall to five feet tall. The Greater Flamingo has a curved beak and a curved neck.
Many say the Greater Flamingo moves gracefully around its habitat. Although that is true this paragraph is about how it move globally. Greater Flamingos travel in groups called colonies. Most colonies can hold up to thousands of flamingos. In those colonies most of the flamingos fly with their mate. They find their mate when they migrate they spend three days in a spot and "dance". They "dance" until they find their mate and when they do that mate is for life. Greater Flamingos travel fast because they can reach up to the high speeds of thirty-one miles per
