The way this dance was, you had to enter the ballroom floor with a specific way of stepping to the beat using your heels, but also like ice skating in a way. Dancing wasn’t as easy as it is now, well for some people. Some other types of dances were Jigs and reels, which as I mentioned before enslaved people and lower class white people would use these methods of dancing, but so did the Virginians. When you would dance “Jigs” it required to only dance with one person and partner, for the “Reels” you could have as much as six people dancing. When it came to teaching and learning the dance, it wasn’t as easy as it seemed.…

The arts manager is often described merely as the facilitator of an artist’s or art organization’s business and financial affairs. This separation between art and business fails to view art as a form of business, one which generates high revenues and contributes significantly to the economy of the community. As art is commonly presented in a dichotomy with business and finance, the role of an arts manager, someone who must walk the line between these two radically different ideas, becomes muddled, and it is difficult to interpret how much artistic involvement the job entails. “The difference between the artist and the arts manager is emphasized so strongly that any influence of the arts manager on the art itself seems impossible” (Kuesters,…

The 1920’s was a time of great change in America. It was dubbed “the roaring 20’s” appropriately as it brought with it a freight train like initiation of social movement across America. The Harlem Renaissance was a marked period of growth and identification for the African American culture originating from its Harlem epicenter in the northeast. The intellectual and artistic movement brought recognition to black arts, literature, and music, and for the first time in history, earned status, respect, and credibility in a world powered by white. Brown is known for her work breaking barriers and expectations on the traditional idea of performance. On March 16, 2018 at the Harvard-Westlake Middle School, I watched the Harvard-Westlake Dance Production Showcase. Performed by the dancers of DP, choreographed by Joe Schenck, Melissa Shade, and the nineteen dancers in the Company, Lights Out portrayed the blur of the line between reality and fantasy. It begins with a group of girls who have gathered for a slumber party. They do all the fun things one would expect at a slumber party and even tell scary stories before finally falling asleep. Throughout Act 1, we are then taken with them to their dreamscape where they live out their fantasies and encounter their worst nightmares.…

Being able to choreograph and perform in dance concert is a very unique and amazing experience. Creating ideas with everyone around you and transforming those ideas into a masterpiece is a process like no other. With everyone’s opinions out in thin air, you can put all of your ideas into one to create something so beautiful. In Modern especially it was really intriguing to watch the whole process of how the dance was created. Since we did originally have a combo to go off of, it was different watching all the different groups create a combo over the steps but just in a different format.…

With this ability she could perform for years. The intense lights, colorful costumes, and ribboned pointe shoes decorated the stage. As the lively music played for those dancing in the spotlight, I waited in the wings, nerves jumping in my stomach. Every little movement would be seen from the peering eyes of the audience. Preparation for this role was packed into a few weeks, and both the honor of earning this part and the pressure of performing well accumulated on my shoulders. Originally, I had an ensemble part with the rest of my dance class, only understudying for role of Autumn, one of the four soloist positions offered in Milwaukee Ballet School’s Spring Showcase, Snow White.…
