Great writing starts with a structured process (GCU Lecture Notes, 2015). The tips I have learned over the years that helps me with my writing are First; I give myself enough time to review the assignment requirements. I use the grading rubrics as guidelines to brainstorm ideas, and research topics as per the instructor’s instructions. Second, I create a rough draft, outline my ideas and research materials, than use those sketches as heading for my paper. In this step I do not worry about grammar, I just ensure I am following instructor requirements. Third, I revise/edit my paper over and over again until I am satisfied that I have covered all the assignment descriptions and answer all questions. Here is where I add/delete words if necessary,

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

This English 101 class has helped me in variety of ways in gaining and shaping skills in writing. I learned how do compose several types of essays including: professional, informal, casual, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these. Every week, the class was given one of these types of essay to write and throughout the class periods, I would start and finish them. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially being writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly.…

My [Un]changing Writing Process There is a game called darts that is based on a point system: the closer you get to the center, bulls eye, the higher the score, with the highest score winning the game. The game is how I can describe my writing style this quarter. I tend to hit the outer edge only, without going any further to nail the bulls eye in the center. Throughout the quarter this is how I have come to judge my writing, I tried to hit all the points with all the darts in my hand. Based on what I’ve learned through exploring readings and writing assignments, my writing process has improve dramatically.…

Though I would have less grammar mistakes writing in Chinese than in English, there are similarities in both English and Chinese writing. That is, the first sentence in each paragraph should start directly the main idea of the paragraph, and one paragraph has one and only one main statement, which is hard for me to reach by one time. Therefore, I revise it again and again from the initial free writing, like a painter drawing the pigments from the bottom to the top. My writing is like a process, which develop every time I review it. This semester, I spent much time free writing and going over my three essays, rhetorical analysis, argumentative topic, and summary and response.…
