The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has local chapters that are all across the country. As of today, there are 70 chapters and branch offices. Each chapter has a board of directors and staff that help spread the word about CF. The agencies raise money to help find a cure for the diseases. There are many different ways that they do this. One of the main fundraising events that they participate in is Great Strides. Great Strides is the foundation's largest fundraising event, it is a nationwide event. With this event one can create a team to walk for a cure. Each year over 125,000 people participates in walks all over the country to support this cause. The main mission of this event is to provide the people with CF with the opportunity to lead a full …show more content…
It is important that you either have a written or verbal agreement with your child’s school. For children with CF, it would be beneficial for them to have an IEP. Some of the accommodations that would be beneficial to be included in their IEP would be: taking time out of the day to take medicine or do airway clearance therapy, adjust school rules to take their own medication, getting homework or tutor when a child in ill or in the hospital. Get audio tapes of missed classes, adjust or waive attendance rules, give access to private bathrooms, do not limit access to bathroom or water, and to have a school medical emergency plan. After learning about this foundation, there are many different things that I have learned about working with children and families with disabilities. It is important to always be in communication with them. If you do not know where they stand on something, then there is not going to be any progress, and there is nothing that you can do to help them until the issue is resolved. Another thing would be that you do not need to assume what they can do without asking and testing them to see. Each child has a different approach to learning. It is not right to assume that they cannot do a specific task because another client that you have with the same condition might have is not able to do the same …show more content…
You never know when you will be working with a child who has CF, so it is important to know a little bit about the disease. It is beneficial once you begin to work with a child with CF to look into the disease by going to the foundation’s website and trying to learn all that you can. By learning about the disease then you will be able to help the family in ways that you know will work based on what all they are going through. One thing that the agency could do would be to raise more awareness about this disease. Sure, CF is not a common as cancer or another type of disease, but it is life threatening just like any other disease can be. If more people know about the risks of having CF then, more people would raise money so that hopefully a cure would be found sooner. There have been so many new things that I have learned about this disease and foundation that I did not know before. This research has brought so much awareness to me and I want to do all that I can to help. Any impact that can be made will help in finding a cure for this life threatening

The first step I would take as an educator to help support families of children with special needs in order to maximize their success in my classroom would be to make sure that the child’s disability has been addressed or has been identified. I would make sure that the parents of the child have the necessary information in order to continue forward. I remember in a parent interview I did for Diverse and Exceptional Learner, that the parent got frustrated because the teacher was not direct with them and kept beating around the bush when the teacher was trying to tell the parent that they think their child has Asperger’s. Parents aren’t going to know what to do when their child is identified having special needs. Therefore, the first step a teacher should take when trying to support a parent with a child with special needs is to point them in the…

While analyzing the required text for this week there were five ethical categories that reoccurred through each document: responsibilities to parents, collaboration, community, personal development, and students. In addition, there are other categories, but these are the most significant to me. Special education teachers have a responsibility to parents: • Use culturally appropriate communication with parents and families that is respectful and accurately understood (CEC, 2010). • Actively seek and use the knowledge of parents and individuals with exceptionalities when planning, conduction, and evaluating special education services and empower them as partners in the education process (CEC, 2010). • Respect the private nature of the special…
