Great People Are Heroes, Not Good People You are not a hero, but do not worry, most people are an average Joe. The people that are selfless, or risk everything to help someone else, and shame others with their courage are the ones we can call heroes. We no longer give honor to the top. Loosely using the term “hero” results in the loss of the true meaning of the word, and how it was once used. Society needs to change the use of “hero” in order to acknowledge real heroes. The term “hero” evolves from its traditional use in literature. On the morning of the 9/11 attacks, Roselle, a guide-dog, leads her blind owner to safety from one of the Twin Towers. Michael Hingson, Roselle’s owner, talks about his experience on 9/11. In the article, “Dog Who Saved Owner on 9/11 Named American Hero Dog,” Hingson thanks Roselle when he says, “‘She saved my life...while everyone ran in panic, Roselle remained totally focused’” (Coffey, Laura T.). Roselle is considerably a hero for not saving herself first, and instead carefully getting her owner to safety. By staying in the burning building, Roselle jeopardizes her life for her owner’s. Roselle is a superhero when comparing her to the use of the word today. Even though Roselle is not a human, she is a true hero.
