Parents are a vital component to a child’s life. They not only dictate how one will grow but they nurture from the moment the baby is in the womb. Although some parents are great at this aspect of bringing up a child, some are not so fitted for the job. Rex and Rosemary Walls can be seen to contradict this idea of “great parenting” throughout the Memoir “The Glass Castle” by Jeanette Walls. The couple fail to accept aid from other people when in need, keep their children safe and resist being selfish for their own needs.

The Walls family was constantly on the move because of their parents. One time they decided to leave the town they were in. On their way out Jeanette explains, “Just then we took a sharp turn over some railroad tracks, the door flew open, and I tumbled out of the car. I rolled several yards along the embankment, and when I came to a stop, I was too shocked to cry, with my breath knocked out and grit and pebbles in my eyes and mouth. I lifted my head in time to watch the Green Caboose get smaller and smaller and then disappear around a bend (Walls 18). Although Rex did not directly do anything to put his family in harms way, he still made the choice to take the sharp turn in the beginning. Luckily nothing critical happened to Jeanette when she came flying out of the car. This could have resulted in a very tragic situation such as head trauma but to Rex’s advantage she was ok. Later Jeanette said that she “ got up and began to walk back towards the houses” (Walls 19). Within the time frame of Rex and Rosemary coming back to get her she could have gotten lost or stolen. After all she was only a little girl alone in the middle of nowhere. Jeanette was put into another threatening situation due to her parents lack of paying attention and lack of protection. They Walls family was currently staying in the city Phoenix because Rosemary’s mother passed down the house. The problem with the house was there were countless perverts around. Jeanette describes it as, “The neighbourhood also had its share of perverts” (Walls 65). What happened was Jeanette’s parents never closed the doors or windows at night which caused the incident. “At night Mom and Dad always left the front door and the back door and all the windows open (Walls 65).
