In The Great Gatsby Tom Buchanan is an arrogant well-to-do man who comes from old money. His lucrative ties makes him feel Superior to others,and this mindset leads to destruction. He can be characterized as an adulterer and abusive. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses color to deepen the reader’s understanding of the characters in the novel. By implying information through colors, Tom Buchanan can be seen to exemplify corruption power and the dehumanization of wealth.
To begin with Mr. Buchanan is an unfaithful husband. He has an affair with a low-class woman named Myrtle Wilson. This makes the relationship he has with his wife Daisy appear to be one-sided because Daisy is aware of the affair, but pretends to be oblivious to the subject. The reader first learns of Tom and Myrtle's Affair when Jordan Baker says “Tom's got some woman in New York” ( Fitzgerald 15), but the topic is not further ventured until chapter two.
