It gave me an emotion to feel as I read and I was able to better understand the text. Both Nick Carraway and Sophia and I were used by a friend in order for them to get to someone else. I think that there is a difference between just reading and believing what we are reading. When a reader can relate a piece of writing in any way to a personal experience, they are given the opportunity to connect an emotion and understand the text more fully. I could read a sad paragraph about death and not tear up or cry. However, if I read that same paragraph and allow myself to believe it is real life, and allow myself to compare an event in my life that is similar, then I am assured tears. I can do so because connections MEAN the text is fitting into my world. I felt sorry for Nick and I felt like he was being used. It is possible he did not mind being used in this way and maybe he did not quite notice that he was be taken advantage of. I was able to use an experience in my life to realize that Jay Gatsby took advantage of him for his own purposes and that is hurtful and not authentic friendship in the moment. I am sure it was possible to make that realization without having experienced it, but because I can fit this section into my own world, I can understand the current relationship between Jay and Nick to a fuller
