During my junior year at Stephen Decatur High School, I was enrolled in American Literature with Mrs. Moore. At first I thought she was a hard teacher because she made us write a lot. I enjoyed writing creative pieces, but in her class she gave us a prompt or we had to analyze a text and prove how the author believed in the American Dream or not. The first essay we wrote I scored a 29 out of 30 and was proud of myself because English has not always been my strongest subject. Our next assignment was on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I enjoyed reading this novel and when it came time to the writing assignment I believed I would do even better than I did last time. During the whole week, I worked extremely hard to complete it to my satisfaction. …show more content…
The day we expected to get our assignments back, I felt calm and confident. When I received my paper and saw what my grade was and the comments my teachers made, my whole mood changed. The grade and the remarks were nothing of what I expected, and the grade was well below what I normally score. After this assignment I started to give up because I did not think I would ever do as good and that my writing, in fact, did not improve at all, but Mrs. Moore told me not give up and to keep trying. The talk we had made me realize that I need to learn from this experience and continue to work hard and do my absolute best. To track our progress, we kept a writing chart in a folder and after every assignment we recorded our score and a comment on how we could improve. From that day forward, I worked even harder to improve my writing. I kept in mind the comments I wrote and what I wanted to accomplish. On the last assignment, I received the highest grade in the class and a perfect grade. This experience taught that even though you fail at something never give up because you can come out a lot stronger. A downfall always paves the way for something
