During the great depression, every family was different in the 1930s although there were some things many of them had in common. A typical family during the great depression would have consisted of a father mother and several children. The average day would commence with the father leaving for work, that is of course if he was lucky enough to still be employed. Most kids walked to their school or road the school bus while the mother would stay home and do laundry. Washing clothes by hand was most common however some families could afford a washing machine. The average take home pay was about 17 dollars a week. Some made as little as 7 dollars a week. Even doctors made only about 60 dollars a week. The prices of products reflected the economic conditions. A Men’s shirt would cost about one dollar, and a washing machine could be purchased for about 33 dollars and a winter coat cost about 22 dollars. Known as hobos they illegally boarded box cars on trains hoping to find work in the next town. Those who were fortunate enough to keep their jobs saw their wages slashed by as much as 60 percent. A worker who had once made one dollar an hour would be reduced to forty cents an hour and would be happy to have their job still. All across the nation fathers who had once held important positions in companies were now searching in dumpsters for their families next meal. Food was scarce for many, cabbage soup became a common meal. Meat and vegetables could no longer be afforded. Some families even resorted to taking turns eating. Some members of the family would eat on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays while others would eat on Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays, with perhaps the entire family eating together on Sunday.
