"Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion." (Martha Graham) A dancer can receive all the training they need to be "great," but once that spark of passion ignites them, that is when they truly are great. I experienced this moment when I was about twelve years old, my first solo. I woke up that crisp, January morning knowing exactly what I had ahead of me. Waiting impatiently backstage, running through the steps in my head over and over again, a million emotions fluttering through me; joy, anxiety, desire. As they call my act, all those feelings vanished as though evaporating into thin air, and I am left with an empty stage, a single spotlight, and myself. Breathing through every movement as if they each lasted a lifetime. I floated across the stage and caught a glimpse of the audience every so often, their eyes captivated on me. Hearing their roaring excitement and reactions as I finish leaves me with a feeling I will never forget. Each movement has a new objective and every breath a fluid as a rippling river. No style is exactly the same, yet with their amazing differences I remain the same dancer. Exploring various sides of myself has never intimidated me, but intrigued me. This art has given me increasing confidence as I mature, and has helped me come out of my shell. For the past 14 years I have aimed for perfection; which at times meant choosing rehearsal over spending time with friends, or sleeping in on the weekends. For as long as I can remember I have been working to reach my full potential and I know that will never stop. I strive to take the confidence and determination dance has taught me and apply them throughout the ups and downs of my life. I never thought my continuation of dance would ever be questioned, until fearing my future got the best of
