Have you ever lost your taste for a certain food? A few years ago, I was struck with a horrible case of the stomach flu. It all started one night when my mom made Asiago Cheese Bagel sandwiches. After I finished eating, my stomach was throbbing, so I went to bed hoping the pain would subside. However, instead I woke up in the middle of the night to the same delirious pain. A few moments later, I sat up and began vomiting off the side of my bed. It struck me that I had contracted the stomach flu and was about to endure a few days of endless puking and stomach aches. During my sickness, the thought of that greasy Asiago cheese bagel I had eaten for dinner made be want to hurl. Even a few days after the flu, just looking at an Asiago cheese bagel made my stomach twist. Perhaps that can be explained by conditioned taste aversion. conditioned taste aversion occurres when a human or animal associates the taste of a certain food with symptoms caused by illness or a toxic substance. Conditioned taste aversion can explain my distaste for Asiago cheese bagels. I paired my meal before getting sick (an Asiago cheese bagel) with the symptoms of my illness (vomiting). Additionally, taste aversion is an example of classical conditioning. Classical conditioning suggests that we learn through an association between two stimuli. Unconsciously, I learned that Asiago cheese bagels are associated with vomiting. In result, I am hesitant to eat an Asiago cheese bagel even a few years after my
