Throughout the story, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, the readers are told about the two gangs, the Greasers and the Socials, and how they affect each other’s lives. Throughout the book, Hinton shows us how the Greasers and Socials are different. The book states how the Greasers are less wealthy than the Socs and even the middle class. Believe it or not but the Greasers and the Socials are very similar. We can talk about the similarities between the Greasers and the Socials. The first piece of evidence to prove the Greasers and the Socs are similar exists on page 46 in the book. Cherry said to Ponyboy, “Just don’t forget that some of us watch the sunset too” (46). This piece of evidence proves that both Ponyboy and Cherry are from opposite gangs but still watch the same sunset. The second piece of evidence exists , on page 1 in the packet Themes, Motifs & Symbols. The packet states, “Cherry Valance, a Soc, and Ponyboy, a Greaser, discuss their shared love for literature, popular music…” (12). This quote shows to us that still after Ponyboy and Cherry being in opposite gangs, they still have similar interests in literature, popular music, and more. The third and final piece of evidence is on page 35 of the book. The book tells us, “Things are rough all over” (35). The last piece of evidence clearly tells us that both the Greasers and the Socials have it rough all over, meaning they both have problems, no matter what.
