The Icon of Grease Will Never Lose Devotion For a movie released in 1978 it still holds true to the drama of high school and the cliche of summer love. Grease became a classic for the same reasons as American Graffiti, it explored the life of teens and culture during the fifties. The film director Randal Kleiser casted a previous academy award nominee, John Travolta and rising Australian star Olivia Newton-John and it is now the movie the two are most known for. The musical is a romantic comedy that takes place in the late fifties with a summer fling between greaser Danny Zuko and good girl Sandy. They part when summer ends, but when school starts again they find themselves attending the same high school. It follows Danny and Sandy as well as the perspective friend groups the t-birds and pink ladies. It was a time of Elvis Presley and Bill Haley on the jukeboxes, dominating an era of Doris Day and Frank Sinatra. “You’re The One That I Want ended a nine-week (nine!) residency at the top of the Official Singles Chart, than Summer Nights came along for a taste of Number 1 itself” (Official Chart 6). “Hopelessly Devoted To You” was even nominated for an Academy Award. As the film came out in the late seventies the music representing the fifties was given a pop influence. “Its good-natured pastiche of doo wop and early rock & roll is infectious and charming” (ALLMUSIC Erlewine). Stephen Thomas Erlewine also said that the music held up better than the original fifties music and that it’s just giddily enjoyable to listen
