Grease: Observation Report

Improved Essays
The preparation for my role as ‘Betty Rizzo’ in ‘Grease’ allowed me to refine, experiment, learn and become the character over the allocated time. Learning the lines, notes, dance moves, positioning and who she was as a sarcastic, good-natured strong woman, the preparation was a success and payed off.
At the end of the production, I breathed a sigh of relief and shed a few tears. I was tired, it was the seniors’ last production, and the week that went past provided plenty of physical and mental pressure. While it was an enjoyable experience and I loved every minute of it, the amount of hours and physical strength it took was unbelievable. Participating in a musical before, it was definitely unlike the other!

The Greaser Co-Culture From the first time the movie Grease premiered, an image for the 1950s was created (Kleiser, 1978). Young girls spent days trying to learn how to dress just like Sandy, and even made their own little gang of Pink Ladies with their friends. Even before the premiere of that movie in 1978, in 1967 the novel The Outsiders was written by S.E. Hinton. The story told of a gang of Greasers in rural Tulsa, Oklahoma, just trying to make their way in society.…

I sat in a crowded auditorium with nothing but my thoughts before I tried out for the Contra Costa County Honor Band. After about two hours I was led into the audition room drenched in sweat with my oboe in my trembling hand. I managed a pretty good audition, but after replaying the audition over and over in my head I doubted whether I would get in. A week later, my band director congratulated me on making principal oboe and handed me Maslanka's Symphony 7, with about 4 parts marked solo in bold letters.…

Most people had an idea of what the sixties were like based on history and readings. Rastrelli goes on to explain how the music, dancing, and acting abilities from the cast is well and kept at a great pace. “While the music is rock, it assimilates country, Hindu themes, Motown, Opera, Native American rhythms and beat poetry when the scene demands it.” The performer’s movements and emotions were taught by choreographer, Jessica Wockenfuss. In addition, another thing Rastrelli enjoyed about the musical was the cast.…

With only about a month to learn these pieces I knew I needed to work hard. I practiced everyday during and after school to prepare for this special event. It was verbalized to the students that if you did not know your part to the music you would be sent home. I made sure I was not going to be one of them. So on November 10th my parents and I were on our way to Winston-Salem for the long and exhilarating weekend to come.…

The emotions expressed by not only the music but by how the musicians looked while playing these pieces made me believe that this show meant a lot to them because they would sway to the music when they weren’t playing. It had my emotions spiral out of control because some of the music was happy then it turned sad in an instance, then it would go right back to something whimsical. It’s not the typical kind of music that I would listen to daily but I am happy that I got to attend this event and hear something that I wouldn’t normally.…

My journey began in July of 2013 at the world’s largest Airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Airventure. Over 10,000 aircraft and over 500,000 people attend this event yearly. It is a spectacular experience where I have made life long friends, and wonderful memories. I was volunteering at the Activities Center for EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) when I was troubled by acute neck pain and an elevated heart rate of 150 bpm.
