Both Anna and Howard let out a light chuckle. After a moment of silence the man’s smile soon vanished.

“Listen Anna, you don’t have to do this. Let’s send out some scouts first. Who know what you’ll find in the Gray-Rock Ruins. We’ll just ration ourselves until we made sure everything is safe.”

“Might as well not eat if we ration ourselves any further. The only reason we are taking this route is because we’re running out of time and we’re desperate. Look Howard, I know you’re worried, but trust me, this is not my first time traveling through ruins like this one. I’ll be fine.”

“I have to go, if we wait any longer then I won’t be able to make it through the ruins before the sky blackens. Then, we’ll have something to worry about.” Anna handed Anya back to Howard. “Anya, be a good girl and keep your dad safe for me, okay?”

“Un!” Anya said while puffing up her chest and making a motion reminiscent of a salute accidently striking herself in the process.

Managing to break free from the first set of waves, I pushed forth into the next set of unceasing five foot waves. With legs bent upwards and arms plunging one after the other in a Michael Phelps mentality to finish the race with swift strokes, I kept my body centered in the middle of my seven foot board just like my grandpa positioned me to do so. With a split second to pause and raise my head to look over an oncoming wave, I made out the face of my grandpa, looking back at me from his own board and grinning at the look of my determined face to get out into the line-up. Eminent to the gray-haired “townies” who create their own spindrift from whipping the tail of their boards high in the air, is a homely beach, Rockpiles.…

The development of an individual's identity is not up to them. No matter who or what a person is, their identity is predetermined from the beginning, and that is something a person cannot change. Readers can see how identities are predetermined by looking at the lives of the phantasm/son and the protagonist/sorceror. There are many instances in "The Circular Ruins" that shows how the sorcerer's identity is predetermined. For example, "he knew that this temple was the place that his unconquerable plan called for," (Borges 97).…

Everyone in the village is gathering in the town square on a "clear and sunny" (1) summer day with flowers "blossoming profusely" (1). Jackson creates the image of a delightful, common summer morning using her description of the setting. The village is not very voluminous as well . The town only contains "about three hundred people" (1). A compact village, rather than a enormous village, helps substantiate the idea that this town is an average, run of the mill town.…

They are anxious because they are worried that their expected experience will fail them, which leads them to seek for approval and validity for their experience. They go about seeking for this approval by telling their ethnologist friend that he should come back with them to the village, “filling the role of sightseer and the sight is living up to the prototype of sights” (4). Once they bring back the ethnologist and are seeking his approval, they do not pay any attention to the festival, but instead watch the reaction of the ethnologist looking for an approval of their experience. In doing this, Percy shows that the couple has now lost a piece of their sovereignty, as they keep telling themselves this is what you are looking for “Now you are really living” (4)! Their anxiety and approval seeking, makes them depend completely on what they think they should be experiencing rather than simply enjoying and taking in the experience without any biased…
