- Elizabeth’s prepregnancy weight status based on her BMI is that she is of normal weight. Her calculated BMI of 23.5 is within the normal weight range of 18.5 to 24.9.
- Elizabeth’s recommended weight gain during the pregnancy is 25-35 pounds due to her BMI being in the normal weight range of 18.5 to 24.9. The reference value used was the BMI of 23.5.
- Elizabeth’s pattern of weight gain from her first visit to the last was relatively steady. She did not show signs of erratic weight gain or loss throughout her pregnancy. When she gave birth at 39 weeks, she was on the upper end of the range of weight that she was recommended to gain from her pregnancy.
- There are a couple of things that could account for Elizabeth’s weight loss in the first 8 weeks. Episodes of morning sickness could cause her to give up a lot of the food and fluids in her body. Morning sickness has a very high rate of occurrence in pregnant women and is resolved by lying down and drinking lots of fluids to stay hydrated. A more sever condition that can account for this is hyperemesis gravidarum in which frequent vomiting also occurs. This is way pregnant women with hyperemesis gravidarum are able to drop weight. This can be resolved by eating smaller portions, more often. Eating five or sex small meals a day can prevent the symptoms.
