The idea behind this paper is that I, the author am to watch a movie and recognize where three sociological theories are being represented, capture that moment and share it with you the reader In hopes that I learn to have a better understanding of these theory’s and that something in my writing sparks an interest in your mind for them as well.

Grave of the fireflies is a movie produced by the animation company “Studio Ghibli” based in 1980’s Japan this movie portraying two young siblings, one by the name of Sieta and the other by the name of Setsuko, struggling to survive throughout a war in their country.

The movie had never said what war was being fought or if it were even one that had happened in real world history. Nether less the opposing country to Japan was winning in the fight for control over Japan, taking up Japan’s resources such as housing, money, food and even the people of japan’s own minds and emotions with their ability to make impacting decisions. This created conflict between that country and the country of Japan.
Functionalism Theory
Emile Durkheim was the core creator of functionalism, (1800) the concept behind this theory is that everyone taking place in the society must work together to create the best society that it could be.
Sieta and Setsuko’s mother had died due to a bombing and their father had just died off at war. So, they were now taking residence in the house of their aunt and their cousins. Sieta and setsuko had to work together with their aunt and her family to achieve their goal of happiness, structure and comfort. There aunt providing the two children with a home and a place to stay and the two children working to bring home money for food. Creating the idea of a functionalist society.

Sieta was holding a firefly in midst of his two hands, trying to give it to Setsuko the fire fly had flew away.
As the firefly flew away the two watched as it started to dance along with the other fireflies. During this time, it seemed that the fireflies held no other meaning in the story but to just bring the two children happiness.
Sieta lay outside of his cave. The cave where he had once watched fireflies dance along the night sky with his younger sister, they cave where he held his dying sister in her last attempts to breath, Sieta laying on the ground closed his eyes, when he proceeded to open them again he saw a world of fireflies. He watched as the fireflies took shape to form a modern-day city of japan.
The fireflies in this movie were meant to represent a better time. A time when the two children could enjoy themselves and be children again without having to worry about war. A time without war over all. A time were the characters could truly be
