Problems arise multiple times a day due to the lack of communication, or over-communication in our squadron, and it can impact productivity significantly. Grapevine communication is problematic, yet it is also a way to get information out to the many, although, the entire communication may not be conveyed. Regarding the grapevine, “it gives managers a feel for the morale of their organization, identifies issues that employees consider important, and helps tap into employee anxieties” (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p.360). Currently, we have Commander calls every Monday, and if the Commander feels it is necessary to halt a communication being spread by the grapevine, he will, which usually ends up with him giving us more clarification.

Therefore, with regards to channels, “some are rich in that they have the ability to (1) handle multiple cues simultaneously, (2) facilitate rapid feedback, and (3) be very personal” (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p.367). Ultimately, knowing when to use the appropriate channels will increase production and satisfaction, which will decrease errors and mistakes commonly made. Regarding productivity in the workplace, it can either be increased or decreased with regards to communication, how it is presented and how someone interprets the language is a critical factor. Multiple approaches are used to convey communication across the workplace, whether it is face to face, email, or written communication. Some communication can be conveyed differently as well, depending on the tone, demeanor, and the word choices. First, we will discuss how the grapevine communication is used throughout the squadron and how it can be beneficial and detrimental. Secondly, we will discuss how email can be used to distribute information quickly to all parties, but can be overwhelming at times.
