When Jacob was young he loved and looked up to his grandpa Abe. His grandpa fought in wars, was in the circus and he was raised in an orphanage. His grandpa told him stories of these Peculiar children who can do amazing things and he saw these children while he was out fighting in the war. Later on, when Jacob is about fifteen his grandfather starts saying there are monsters after him. Jacob thinks his grandpa is going crazy but later that night his grandpa was found dead in the woods with a huge wound on him so maybe he wasn't crazy. This was proof that all his stories were true and that he wasn't crazy after all. He sees a girl that can make fire out of thin air and she runs once she sees him. Jacob starts to chase through a cairn, which turns out to be a portal into the past, which takes Jacob to September 3, 1940, the day before Miss Peregrine's home was destroyed by a bomb. Miss Peregrine took care of a lot of children there and she can also turn into a peregrine. Jacob ends up falling in love with the girl who can make father and her name was Emma, she looks sixteen but is really more like 150 because you don't age in the time loop. The monsters that murdered his grandpa were called hollowgast. Jacob finds out Golan is one and they find out he is trying to kill Miss Peregrine. Jacob and his new peculiar friends try to kill Golan and the hollowgast and rescue Miss Peregrine. Miss Avocet is taken away, and Miss Peregrine is stuck in bird form. Because she can't change back for some reason, the time loop collapses, the bomb falls, and the home is destroyed.
