There’s a disparity between Grant and Vivian schools; Vivian’s school is wealthier compared to Grant’s. Their personalities can be shown through their teaching styles. Being a man in his mid-twenties, Grant is a sarcastic, selfish, mean, depressed, and cynical. On the other hand, Vivian is loving and intelligent.

A kid was counting with his fingers while another was playing with a bug and he hits them both with his ruler. Despite knowing that many of his students have poor and/or abusive homes/families, he is too self and mean to care about them. Therefore, he creates a frightening atmosphere for the students to learn in. Furthermore, this might make some of his student think that there is nowhere safe for them to be.
Vivian, Grant's girlfriend, is beautiful, loving, and intelligent. Like Grant, she teaches core subjects, but she additionally teaches French. Dissimilar to Grant’s school, her school has five rooms some which are doubled. Contrasting to Grant’s school, she has enough supplies for her class.
Vivian, a mulatto, has children and was left by her husband because their children were too black. Despite being still married, she is dating Grant while she is in the process of getting a divorce. Unlike Grant, she doesn’t take her stress or anger on her students. In contrast to Grant, she is a patient and calm woman who can separate her personal emotions from her teaching.
