Granito documentary
Mayans Suffering
Guatemala has gone through a lot of suffering in the past and it is still striving to recover. Pamela Yates, narrates about the struggles along with the help of others including Rigoberta Menchu. Granito is a documentary and more than that is a living testimony of the injustice that exists in our countries, in this case Guatemala. After watching the documentary of Granito how to capture a dictator, I've learned many things that I never imagined, the cruel things people do to achieve power and earn respect. Granito, is about the tragedies and abuse towards the Mayan people in Guatemala. It was mostly focused on the genocide of the Maya caused …show more content…
I got very sentimental after watching this documentary because it was sad to see how people are being sacrificed to change both the system of government and to implement the practice of justice. In the 1980s, the government removed the land belonging to the indigenous, displacing them; many had to go to the mountains where they died due to its weather and geographical conditions. The Mayas did not have water or any access to food in the mountains and the cold end up killing many of them. To avoid that the Mayas and land workers will rebel, the people were killed by orders of Dictator Rios Montt, responsible for more than 200,000 thousands innocent people’s death. However, due to the efforts of journalists, lawyers, anthropologists, and indigenous; it has been proven of the fact, that this was a genocide done by the government. Rios Montt, also had the support of the U.S. who were blinded about the war and genocide within Guatemala. However, it is a shame that the majority of the population did not wanted to do a testimony of the killings, because there was no justice and they could be killed at any time. For example, in the documentary they show a threating letter directed to the Anthropologist, although it was not safe for him to continue with his study, he did so to provide means …show more content…
The guerrillas have bad reputation, but in this case it was a means formed to fight back. The injustices caused it and the military government of Rios Montt provoked it. Another disconcerting thing about this genocide is that the United States supported the Government and did not intervene when they could. It is sad that indigenous people have to go through things to try and preserve their culture. Rigoberta Menchú is a very admirable woman. Her much fought for her people and struggled had made a difference, and have also been a voice for those who cannot part take in politics. Her work has been well recognized in the world awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. There are not many people in the world who can say that they have won this prestigious award. For me it is very important to defend those who have no voice, because the Government won't let them. It is very important to know when should interfere and when one should be kept away. It is sad to know that a rich culture has been damaged and almost destroyed by what happened. Certainly this genocide of the indigenous Mayans of Guatemala is something that will never be forgotten by the world, and especially the families of the
