As an avid sports player, I’ve been a part of Caribe since the year 2003, which was when they had just been starting up. I was a part of both baseball and basketball. Growing up my parents instilled that education came first then followed sports, just the same expression Bridgeport Caribe has always instilled in their young members. Being part of this organization really built my work ethic and made me more weary of giving back to the community. Once I finished my eighth-grade season, Caribe would no longer let me play because of my age. I decided to coach the sixth through eighth-grade division alongside my father. Coaching helped me develop leadership, I learned that I’m a task-oriented leader as well as a person-oriented leader. A task-oriented leader is most interested in training, instructing behavior, performance and winning. A person-oriented leader is more interested in the interpersonal relationships on the team. I also learned that great leaders in and out sports are both tasks- and people-oriented, but lean more towards being task-oriented. I enjoyed passing on my knowledge of leadership to these kids. Just because someone may be working, it may be tough for that particular person to afford the basic necessities in life. This is true for many people across Ontario, as one in five people spend more than thirty percent of their income on housing (Housing Affordability, 2016). Due to this high number, many people across Ontario, rely on the government and organizations to help them attain the basic necessities such as food and shelter. This is why volunteers for non-profit organizations are critical for the survival of many Canadians. In addition to volunteers, affordable housing is crucial as the prices in the private market rental are simply too high for many Canadians.…

About five miles from my hometown there lies a small town called Chisholm. This city has no hospital and only one clinic. Within city limits, there lies a small school, an old grocery store and one dental office, Chisholm Dental. Run down buildings and “Out of Business” signs hang heavy on the street corners, which may explain why the average household income in Chisholm is less than 30,000. Poverty can be seen both on the front porches and the back alleys of this city.…

Twelve ounces of bright orange frosting, along with unidentifiable cupcake ingredients, covered nearly every inch of my white skirt. Because an obscure sentence about frosting does not make much sense, I’ll explain. The campers at The Special Children’s Center, a camp for special needs children, were decorating cupcakes with what else but colored frosting, which proved to be an exciting, but supremely messy, idea. Immediately after beginning, an adorable little girl with Down syndrome came up to me with a massive, but mischievous, smile on her face and gave me the biggest hug I’ve ever received. Naturally, I was covered from head to toe in textures I would prefer never to encounter.…

“Nothing ever goes my way!” we, as teenagers, sometimes like to think. I, myself have been caught thinking this same way when I desire something, whether it be about a tangible item or just a chance to hang out with some friends. Upon completing my senior project, my eyes were wide open. I have always been aware that there are homeless and impoverished people in Sacramento, but witnessing a large number of less fortunate children in one setting, whom all feel that “having a little” is the way of life was a bit appalling to me.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
