I went to sleep that night thinking it was just another day coming to an end and tomorrow would be the same routine. I was wrong. My dad woke me and my siblings up a few hours later and I knew right away there was an issue with my grandpa. He had been in the hospital for a couple days already, but the nurses assured us he would be coming home soon. I fought back the negative thoughts that seeped into my brain; I was not ready to cry yet. Driving to the hospital, the world seemed to move in slow motion. No one spoke a single word. You could hear the blood circulating through our veins. Rain fell faster than our windshield wipers could move, but I still didn’t notice it. Physically I was present in the car, but mentally I was not. I was frozen.

My grandpa took shallow breaths as he lye in the hospital bed. Despite the circumstances he still had a smile on his face. My family and I sat around him and held his hands. The touch sent a bone chilling sensation down my spine. His smile slowly vanished. My grandpa was a tough man; I had never seen him cry. Until now. A single tear rolled down his face. My heart was ripped out of my chest, thrown to the ground and stomped on. My whole world came crashing down on me. Tears fell from my eyes in an unbroken stream. I tasted the salt as the tears dripped down my lips. A lump filled my throat. I choked on my words. Finally, I was able to spit out my goodbyes. “I love you,” “I love you,” “I love you,” I felt myself repeating. My grandpa was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his words moved mountains. He looked my straight in the eyes and said “I love you Jordan, continue making me proud,” That was the last thing my grandfather ever said to me and I do not take it
