Because of her interest in our family’s history, I decided to interview my older cousin Kathleen Donahoe. Even though she’s young, I thought she would be the biggest help with this project because she would actually enjoy answering my questions and she is very knowledgeable on the subject. I know typically a grandparent is interviewed, however, my grandma and grandpa were not first-generation immigrants from Czechoslovakia or Ireland, so I decided Kathleen would be a better source of information. In general she’s a history buff which is why she has a history degree and works as an archivist for the University of Pittsburgh. She is always going through our grandparent’s attic looking at photos and old letters, and she has done a lot of research into our ancestors.…

Major Findings from the Interview: Technology has vastly improved over my grandfather’s lifetime. Technology is incorporated in a lot of people’s lives. As my grandfather mentions, most teenagers who sit down to have a family meal will have their phones by them. Since technology is extremely incorporated in our lives, it is completely normal for people to be holding two conversations at the same time. One of those conversations can be through texting and another conversation can be in person.…

Through my interactions with my extended family over the course of this project, it has become evident that there are specific traditions and values that each side of my family holds dear. Both sides of my family certainly share some common values and traditions among them; however, over several generations each side has its own distinct folklore and values that have been passed down through time. Despite my premonition that interviewing my family would be a rather simple and straightforward endeavor, getting the information that I was hoping to find from my family has been anything but easy. Following my interviews with my family, it is clear that the traditions and values of both sides of my family differentiates them as well unites them.…
