When I was a child, Grandma was much like Mrs. Claus to me. I could not wait to get to her house and load up on chocolate, candy, cake, doughnuts, cokes, popcorn and a favorite TV program. Oh, what a great she was!

I was drawn to her and spent hours at her house. Our relationship blossomed into a friendship. We would speak of politics and relationships. Since she had been an educator, she would give me educational advice. However, she also counseled me on relationships and friendships. In 1993, I realized there was something special between us when she invited me to Grandpa’s OSU Cotton Bowl Reunion, and I invited her to my best friend’s bachelorette party. She taught them wonderful songs and games, like “Bushel and a Peck” and Yahtzee. Grandma helped us imagine the past with her fantastic family stories. Her memory never faded. We learned of the chain of sports store her brother owned before Wal-Mart came to Oklahoma and that she and Grandpa got the first GI Bill home loan in Payne County. She taught the kids valuable lessons with stories of mistakes that she had made in the past. What I learned from her, I will take with me through life. She said that if you have a few really good friends, and if you are honest and loving with your family, it will be enough to fill your heart for all of your days. Oh, what a great she
