Thanksgiving Myths There are many Thanksgiving myths but I’m here to talk to you about two of them. The first one is “Native Americans wore complicated headdresses.” Well the feathery headdresses you are thinking of are barely worn only on special occasions.…
Grossed out he says “ewwww” and runs to the hallways, where he meets up with his father. His father doesn’t understand why he is in such a rush and then the father starts to cough all over his face. Looking at the expression on the young boy’s face, he is completely aghast. Then he tip toes slowly to remove himself…
I couldn’t believe that I was stuck in boring old Pulaski, Virginia. What a perfect place to run out of gas on the annual trip from West Virginia to Florida. I had assumed that I would just lay out at the local all night pub. But as soon I entered the establishment, an old man greeted me at the door and he blocked my entrance. He said he wanted a chance to tell an outsider about the story of his great grandfather, Jack Jackson.…
When my father moved to America, he would help his youngest siblings by sending them money to help raise their children. As his siblings’ kids have gotten older they wanted to flee the country to go to Europe by traveling to Libya, then taking a boat through the Mediterranean Sea to get to Italy. My father told them that he would not help financially if they decided to make the trip because it was too dangerous. They decided to embark on the trip regardless and called my father from Libya for money to help pay human traffickers to take them over the Mediterranean Sea to get to Italy. However, my father refused to give them money because if they died or gotten hurt he would then blame himself.…
The King after traveling for a long time, decided to stop at Taghaza and stay here, but it was probably one of the worst decisions ever. The water was very salty and slaves only lived there. Salt was mined and it was very valuable. I get out my pieces of paper and pen and I write down my observations. Not many good things come out of this place.…
After immigrating to the United States, with virtually no English skills, I was lonely. I recall trying to talk with girls at school and not even being able to share the simplest of stories with them. My every attempt to build friendships failed. As a social person, who is invigorated by conversation, this was crushing. I could not even share similar experiences with them due to the financial struggles my immigrant family faced.…
Growing up as a young man, the word “immigrant“ never really crossed my mind, till i started to discover my family's history. I have immigrants on both sides of my family. My mother is from Belize and both of my father’s parents are immigrants, my grandmother is from Bermuda and my grandfather is from Poland. In the process of growing up, I started to ask questions I never knew the answers to and started to research as I never did before. Coming to a new found realization of the meaning of word immigrant .…
I am a daughter of two second generation immigrants. I am a first generation Asian American daughter. My grandmother was the first generation immigrant. My grandmother was the hero in this story. We are immigrants.…
At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…
Although my mother and I have had countless conversations about her previous life experiences, I was surprised at how much I did not know prior to this interview. I had never thought to ask her about what networks and resources she used to adjust to her new lifestyle in the United States. Our conversation made me realize the importance of friends, family and professionals to shape her as an immigrant parent. Growing up, she was not only a mother but a mentor to me—she supported me endlessly and helped me overcome my challenges as an adolescent. Her story begins with her life in South Korea.…
Her granddaughter is part Irish part Chinese. In fact, the elder woman believes her granddaughter is more “wild” and takes after her Irish side than Chinese (25). Her granddaughter is very disobedient and under her eyes her daughter and husband doesn’t do anything about it therefore her granddaughter gets to do anything she wants to without getting spank. She doesn’t see how a Chinese child would act like her granddaughter does because Chinese children are well…
After being asked by the professor about my family’s immigration story, I am motivated to find out more about my family’s history. Most of the time, people do not have the opportunity to ask their elderly family, relatives about their ancestors. It is really amazing to learn more about my family history. It never comes to my mind till now. To gather more information, I asked my mom, my older brother, my grandpa, uncles, and aunts.…
Friendliness is inseparable from courtesy. And courtesy demands a considerate and friendly behaviour towards others. For example, if I have overlooked or failed to do something, I would express my regrets promptly and sincerely and make up for the oversight at the earliest.…
For this paper, I decided to select Topic #2 (Oral History-Immigrant) and interview my father, Genaro Gopar. In doing this paper, I come across new experiences he shares with me--ones that he has never revealed to the family. In this interview, he reveals his overall immigrant experience, adversities, values, and thoughts. My Father was born in a poor family and raised in a small town called Oaxaca in Mexico.…
