Decent Essays
Speaking of the “real world”, a viral video of a video game called Grand Theft Auto V sparks the question on the stereotype regarding the cops shooting a Black man. According to The Game Theorists, they have set up multiple tests on three main character of the game and the result ended with the Black character a high number of chance being shot by the police [Youtube]. Crash Coogan is the 3rd most monstrous, TRIBEless shell of a person after I have read a book on. This is behind a rapist and a woman who killed her niece, daughter, and large sections of her dominion’s population. The reason that he is barely behind these savages, is the large amounts of horrible actions he does to the decent people of his middle school. Although, at least, Coogan only affected a few with this behavior.…

Stereotypes of gender and sexuality can be strictly seen in American television shows such as: The Family guy, The Simpsons, The Rescue Heroes and many more. Even though all the shows guarantees for entertainment and keeps our thoughts from our day to day stressful activities for a moment; nonetheless, it also occupies our bran and shatters our thinking hat which we then fail to see the extreme gender and sexual stereotypes depicted throughout the series. The show I have chosen to focus and pin points the stereotypic act is from “The Rescue Heroes and The Family guy.” The first series is about a group of males who travels around the nations rescuing lives from both natural and man-made artificial disasters.…

In the film Crash, there are numerous stereotypes about each race and ethnicity throughout the movie. These stereotypes were challenged in this movie as each character found their own truths in their lives. At the end of each story, the stereotypes each character held were broken and proven to be wrong. A stereotype that I had challenged was that only small-town police officers are racist and use their status to do corrupt actions, while officers in major cities are the opposite.…

In an article published by TIME an Associate Professor and Chair of Psychology at Stetson University, Christopher Ferguson, weighs in on how poorly research has been done, “Quite simply the research just hasn’t panned out… it has been increasingly recognized that much of the early research on violent video games linking them to increased aggression was problematic: most studies used outcome measures that had nothing to do with real-life aggression and failed to control carefully for other important variables such as family violence, mental health issues or even gender in many studies (boys play more violent video games and are more aggressive).” Another shot at how bad experiments “proving” that violent media leads to real world behavior was in a Supreme Court case, Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association, where Edmund G. Brown was fighting to remove the restriction of the sale or rental of video games to minors in California. In this court case Brown completely destroyed Anderson’s experiments saying that the California nor any psychologists, including Anderson can provide any link between violence in video games and harm to minors. He went on to scrutinize how the experiments were done saying that the studies have been rejected by every court to consider them and that all experiments that “proved” violence in video games cause real world violence has been made purely on correlation and not causation, he then went on to show how flawed the methodology of the experiments were. Edmund G. Brown won his court case, overturning the Californian law that restricted sale and rental to a minor, with the United States Supreme Court ruling in a 7-2…

More prominent in the news now more than ever, is the reporting of black men being shot down by police, and more often than not now, it feels unjustified. When we discuss racial bias by police officers, it can be described through four different mechanism’s: racial profiling, deployment, cognitive bias and stereotyping, and prejudice and racial animus. What is more likely at play is an unconscious, singling out and stereotyping.…

These unfavorable characterizations of black roles, according to Jeannette Dates, “fuel misperceptions and facilitate misunderstandings among racial or cultural groups” (3). Media has a lasting influence on how people perceive different ethnic groups. Audiences use the information the see in entertainment to form opinions about different social groups. When people only base their opinions of different ethnicities based on the screens because of a lack of exposure to direct interaction minorities it causes them to believe these negative portrayals of blacks are accurate depictions of society (Horton 2). Even if most white people know that not all blacks are violent and uneducated based off of the black people they know and interact with, they may believe that the ones they don’t know still display characteristics of these stereotypes (Horton 8).…

Racial biases are present in all facets of American life but the recent focus has shifted to police brutality and the treatment of African Americans by law enforcement officials. Cops regardless of race are more likely to shoot an unarmed black person than they are to shoot an unarmed white person (Correll). While this may seem like another example of unconscious bias, people working in a field that has killed 1205 people…

In “The Female Link: Citation and Continuity in Watchmen” by Erin M. Keating, the author adds to the discussion of women in comics by negating that Watchmen was not an example of “the revisionary superhero narrative” because women were still being represented as conservative. Watchmen does not address the societal gender identities but rather it continues the gendered identities that were already in comic books. “In Adult Comics: An Introduction, Roger Sabin describes women in comic books as ‘‘invariably either plot devices (there to be rescued) or sex symbols (all plunging necklines and endless legs)’’. The author describes that Wonder Women was created as a sex symbol to appeal to male leadership by her creator, William Marston. Unlike Wonder…
