The Grand Rapids Chair Company represented a partnership between Grand Rapids sawmills and lumber mills. The site is notable for its adaptation both to changes in ownership and the demands of the furniture industry, through which it impacted the surrounding community of laborers. Sanborn Fire Insurance maps show several additions to the building since its construction, the two largest being the expansion to abut Monroe Street, apparent on the 1912 map, and the Baker Furniture addition, built at some point between the 1957 acquisition and 1970. Both additions expanded existing manufacturing space, allowing for an in-house showroom.
