Grand City University: A Case Study

As a new administrator, understanding the culture of Grand City University is paramount. Change can be stressful and budget cuts are rarely if ever met with excitement. Much more likely, they cause people to doubt the stability of an organization and even the continued viability of there own positions. Taking the culture into consideration will dictate the solution we implement well as how these cuts are communicated to the university at large. Wisely, Beling (2014) provided anecdotal context of the pitfalls of coming in as a new administrator without understanding the institutional climate. More important than the proposal itself, understanding the atmosphere will speak louder of my suitability as an administrator than the assiduous way I work toward any solution.
Cost cutting will be a major opportunity to meet this immediate 2.5% demand, however, given the current trends of reduced funding to support institutions such as ourselves, I recommend we implement a taskforce with the focus of seeking opportunities to increase our own sustainability. This task force should comprise stakeholders across the institution including to some degree students so that we give voice to everyone as we work together to preserve the integrity of our mission.

The best laid plan can be poorly received if not handled with the care and concern of those two factors at any institution. How the proposal is publically communicated will also be largely determined by both factors. Our foremost goal with every decision made is to ensure we continue to provide our students the opportunities to transform themselves so that they can effect positive social change.
