It is an institution associated with Professor Mohammad Yunus and the micro-credit of the poor in Bangladesh. He held the position of Managing Director at Grameen Bank, an institution he founded in order to help the poor in his home country. Grameen Bank, which was set up in 1976 and was then transformed into an independent bank from governmental legislation in October 1983, is a microfinance organization and community development bank that offers microcredits or Grameen credits to the very poor without asking for guarantees. Since its launch, the bank has provided loans to more than eight million poor people in Bangladesh. Unfortunately, the fact that it is so recent prevents us from finding out whether or not it is a long-term sustainable model because it has recently been nationalized. The bank's initial funding was provided through small-interest capital provided by various donor agencies (Ford Foundation, World Bank, etc.). In the mid-1990s, the bank's main funding came from the central bank of Bangladesh, and later issued bonds guaranteed by the government of the country. In 2013, however, the government issued the Grameen Bank Act, in which it abrogated the Grameen Bank Ordinance from 1983 and gave the state the main decision-making rights for any aspect of running the bank.
Grameen Bank with Muhammad Yunus are considered pioneers of the social economy and social entrepreneurship even before these two terms have even ben officially mentioned. In the past three decades since Yunus started his business many have tried to replicate in different parts of the world and others are staring to build new organisations that specifically address social issues following thw pattern that Yunus created by combining good ethics with an opportunity of a business and and empathetic trust in the community and the human
