Sabrina Coccia Women Images & Realities 9/22/2015 Reading Analysis #2 Although, most people assume feminism is just about being against ‘the man’, it is more than that. Usually, when individuals think of feminists, they immediately think of white feminists but what about the colored feminists. Colored women have to endure racial based problems more than white women. Colored women have to endure white supremacy oppressing them. In “No Disrespect Black Women and the Burden of Respectability” by Tamara Winfrey Harris and “Ideals and Expectations: Race, Health and Femininity” by Margaret A. Lowe, these writers talk about the ways in which ‘politics of respectability’ is forced upon and the effects on women of color especially on their bodies.…

I believe this because even though she dishonored the Chinese army and let everyone down including her family, she was still determined to go on after breaking multiple laws and the rules of chinese culture. Near the end of the movie when Mulan defeats the Huns and the empire of China is safe, people still fail to recognize her great feat just because she is a girl. After Mulan had defeated the Huns the Emperor’s consultant Chi Fu, said, ” This is a woman. She will never be worth anything.” This goes to show that even if a woman saved a nation from disaster, she would still be judged and her accomplishments would be looked at differently because she was a…

Before and after 1949, the gap between the possibilities and limits of Chinese women’s lives was large, where the limits on women far surpassed the possibilities for a prolonged amount of time. Societal views were placed upon women, creating a system in which women must conform to a specific type of person or they would be shunned upon by those around them. This system was what determined the future of a woman in China. In the following stories, “Sealed Off”, by Ailing Zhang, “A Woman Like Me”, by Xi Xi, and “Fin de Siecle Splendor” by Zhu Tianwen, we explore the status of women during these periods of times.…

Kingston experiences gender discrimination at home, especially from her mother and father, who always favor the boys and not the girls. Kingston’s father is said to be so discriminatory that he “refused to eat pastries because he didn 't want to eat the dirt the women kneaded from between their fingers”(Kingston, 98). Chinese believed that woman were dirty, and second to men. The image of men juxtaposes the image of women. Men are thought of as “gifts from God”, while women are thought of as “maggots in the rice” (Kingston, 69-70).…

Generally, men are associated with superiority, activeness and strength, while women are articulated with inferiority, passiveness as well as weakness. Concerning Kingston’s The Woman Warrior, there seems to be one additional attribute to the men-women dichotomy: men as the favored sex and women as unfavored one. This chapter demonstrates whether there is actually a favored sex in The Woman Warrior’s Chinese spatial setting and if it does, what the female characters did in order to be respected like…

Florence Kelley was a strong and influential leader during the Women’s Civil Rights movement; she spoke at the National American Women’s Suffrage Association in 1905 to persuade in favor of change for the greater and common good. In her speech, Kelley utilizes pathos, anaphora, and connotative diction to convey her claim that the injustices of child labor can be reformed by women attaining political power (such as the right to vote) and that it is their moral obligation to do so. Throughout her entire speech, Kelley applies pathos to inspire sympathy, feelings of guilt , and appeal to maternal instincts.…

White Supremacy’s Effects on Masculinity & the Implications for Black Coupling In Joy Bennet Kinnon’s assessment of black marriage, she consults sociologist Dr. Frank Harold Wilson on black relationships, yielding a thought-provoking phenomenon about the behavior of today’s couples. Dr. Wilson blames society’s “consumption culture” for the deteriorating quality of relationships – relationships have developed into situations that are like games and “being on stage” (194). Instead of investing time and energy into a loving, authentic bond, men and women put their time and energy towards the “show”, following society’s scripts of behavior, and creating unnecessary drama (193). As a young person, my best speculation as to why we do this is that…

Meanwhile, the African-American people of the country had already identified ways that society was impeding on their freedom and fought back using various forms of protest as well as organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Mary King was a young woman who joined the staff of the Student…
