The history of AT&T starts with the invention of the telephone. Alexander Graham bell, the inventor of the telephone, created The Bell Telephone Company in 1879. In 1885, Bell created the American Telephone and Telegraph company which became the main phone company in the United States. Until the company was split in 1982 by antitrust regulators, it maintained a holding on the telephone service in the United States. The corporation was ultimately purchased by one of the Baby Bells in 2005 and became known as AT&T Inc. The management of American Bell created what would become known as AT&T Long Lines in 1880.
