Graffiti Knight by Karen Bass helps IB students understand the concept of international mindedness. This book includes the concepts of poverty and inequality after WW2, the reactions of the citizens whose loved ones fought in the war, and what it looked and felt like. This book would also be a good novel study for IB students, because it helps to understand the hardships from the aftermath of the war.

During the war, most places were bombed, resulting in most families having no money. For example, Wilm, Karl and Georg, who were living on barely any money or food. A family's relationship is very close, like Anneliese and Wilm. Anneliese shot multiple officers in order to save Wilm’s life, but Wilm and his father had a very rocky relationship and were always arguing. Karl, Georg and Wilm were always the best of friends, even through some tough situations, but they had managed to stay together all the way through. Another example of relationships would be between Georg and Ruth who are boyfriend and girlfriend and they love each other very much. Ernst, one of the antagonists in this book, had a history with both Wilm and Annaliese. He was almost an older brother to Wilm, but after breaking up with Wilm’s sister, Anneliese, Ernst became both their enemy. Building relationships is one of the key components of the IB program’s goals. This will help IB students in the future - in school, at work, and even in the community. IB students will learn the importance of having good relationships with people, and they will learn how to deal with

Rex Reed’s review of the play describes how the Weston family closely resembles the typical American family. The characters display their eccentricities and complexities, which can occur within any family. Not only did they openly display their flaws, addictions, and cruelty towards one another, but they also showed loyalty, love, humor and sympathy for each other. Deficit thinking is the central topic under study in module four. Jupp (2013) writes, “life and teacher story interviews provided pages upon pages that discussed structural understandings of student differences, yet in a contradictory turn, teachers retained deficit understandings of students as well” (p. 106). Firstly, these structural understandings that Jupp (2013) describes, can be understood as “differences [that] exist in relation of historical and social center and margins” (p. 57). If we look at the social and historical centers in America we can see them as a hegemonic center that has evolved out of western European culture and institutions (Jupp, 2013, p. 57).
