When I originally came to America, I was terrible at writing. I improved very quickly in my speaking, listening, and reading skills, but writing was much harder for me because in South Korea, I never had any writing assignments during middle and high school; therefore, I never had any real chance to improve my writing skills. Furthermore, creating concrete thesis statements has always been one of the hardest aspects of writing a paper for me. I have struggled to narrow down my opinion to a specific thesis; my thesis statements have always been too vague. Also, since my speaking has improved the most, I use a lot of informal language. Therefore, I have struggled with using formal language in my writing; however, after taking this course, College Writing, not only has my use of informal language in my writing decreased significantly but also my thesis statements have become stronger and more specific.
As an international student who speaks English as a second language, everything is challenging for me, especially writing a paper because I have to put double the amount of effort and time compared to other students who have to write papers. Therefore, my assignments were weaker compared to some of the other students in my class. During every one-on-one session about my papers, my professors always point out that my paper is too informal and sometimes too vague. For this reason, I asked some of my friends how to speak proper English and how to write formally with proper English.…
