Would you want to work for free? Without receiving money or school credit for your work? Sadly, this is a situation many universities have set up for their students, benefitting themselves and corporations. Universities must put the students first, not themselves, by providing school credit towards graduation and by ensuring that internships posted on campus and campus websites are paid internships.

Universities are making money off unpaid internships as is the case at Menlo College in California, in which the college was selling credits to Dream Careers and grossed $50,000 in 2008 alone. In return Dream Careers sold the Menlo internships for as much as $9,500, profiting both. The National Association of Colleges and Employers surveyed over 700 colleges and found that 95 percent allowed the posting of unpaid internships on campus and through campus Web sites. Of the 95 percent of colleges that promoted unpaid internship, only 30 percent required that students obtain academic credit. According to Ross Perlin, author of the essay “Unpaid Interns, Complicit Colleges”, of the college advisors he spoke to they all admitted to not being able to “monitor and reassess” all placements let alone postings. Most also admitted to not having the ability to visit student workplaces.
Benefits of Solution An extraordinary benefit is that students will be more confident in the work they do and achieve greater work in class and at their internships. Students will have more pride in their school and be happier to attend a university in which they feel supported instead of someone the school is only taking money from. If huge amounts of students feel like they are just a number the college will lose out because those students will at the least not attend any school events and at the most decide to attend a different university where they feel
