Graduation Speech: The Vietnam War Memorial

Washington D.C. is made up of many historical landmarks. Each landmark has its own meaning and can teach future generations on how the United States of America got to where we are today. Although all seventy-four historical landmarks sound interesting and educational, there's only one I would love to visit. The Vietnam War Memorial will always hold a special place in my heart because my grandpa was one of the fortunate soldiers who made it home after the war. Throughout my life, my grandfather has always told me stories about his time in the war, and about the people he has lost. One story that sticks out, is when my grandfather had watched his best friend "Snooks" get killed during the war and he had to carry his best friend's lifeless …show more content…
Although I have never met my grandfather's friends, I can tell by my grandfather's emotions, how they all impacted his life. If given the chance, I would love to have the opportunity to see and touch a part of my grandfather's past and be able to share the experience with him. Looking back now on my eighteen years of life with him, it hurts to see that once strong soldier become the old man on oxygen we see today. It would honor not only me, but my grandfather, if I could sit and talk to him about my experience while I visited his past. I believe I would be a good candidate for the 2017 Washington Youth Tour for several different reasons. I am an outgoing responsible person who is willing to take control of any situation. I am also very eager to learn new things and I enjoy meeting new people. I am always willing to help and stand by my peers and I am open minded when it comes to new ideas. And finally, I am respectful to everyone I come into contact with. In conclusion, I hope to be chosen for this opportunity to travel with my peers so I can personally experience the history that Washington D.C. has to offer me as a young adult. Not only with it be an experience of my lifetime, it will create an even tighter bond with my grandfather knowing that I can share a piece of his history with
