Graduation Speech: The Importance Of Speech By Ellen's Speech

Ellen’s speech, in my opinion, was informative. She commenced to tell the audience about her life before stardom, letting everyone know that she worked several different jobs that paid about minimum wage. Almost every college student can relate to that scenario, going to classes and working one or two jobs just to make ends meet while in college. Then she went on to talk about how she had no ambition and felt lost and didn’t know what she wanted to do. What college student hasn’t felt that way before? How many times have college students changed their majors because they weren’t sure if that was what they wanted to do for the rest of their life? Besides, not just college students that feel lost and have no idea what they want to do or should do with their lives. The point is that most of us have been there at one time or another and we are all doing fine. …show more content…
By doing that she kept the graduating class and the audience engaged. By adding some “real world truth” in non-intimidating ways, it seemed more casual, down-to-earth, and entertaining. Ellen didn’t bore us with mundane ideas that one might find in some commencement speeches. While positioned behind the podium, there was no walking around or leaning on the podium. She did, however, turn her head to face a section of the audience making good eye contact and used some small hand gestures. The inflections in her voice added to her speech, something that I need to work on, made it even more interesting. Unfortunately, there were some vocalized pauses in her speech where she used the words “um,” “and um.” Rather than vocalizing she should have just paused and left it at that.

While watching the video of Ellen DeGeneres giving the commencement speech at Tulane University, I found myself relating to almost everything she was saying, not just what she was saying, but was how she was saying

Have you spent your life on things that make it worth living? Are you simply existing in this life or are you living in it? Anna Quindlen in her Commencement Address at Villanova College forces us to ask ourselves these questions as she leaves long lasting imprints in the minds of the attendees and graduates. Quindlen’s use of rhetorical devices, personal stories, and quotes helps her express her main points, that one must make their life worth living and that life should never be taken for granted because there are so many things to live for. Throughout Qundlen’s speech she uses all three of the appeals to create a connection with her audience.…

Recently my two classmates have shared their opinions on two speeches titled Gay marriage in America and Georgia tech freshman convocation speech. My first classmate has given preference to the second speech. It seems that he is more inclined to Shelby as a person with charisma who is capable to attract attention but not to the content of his speech. Thus, Shelby, as a college student (ethos), tells very emotionally about the major things which every student of his college must know. He actively uses tone and gestures to express his thoughts and make the audience believe what he says.…

From the beginning of recorded history, speeches have a tendency to be influential as they connect with their audience and illicit a specific thought or emotion. Continuing this custom, writer David Foster Wallace delivered his compelling commencement speech aptly titled, “Commencement Speech,” to an audience of students at Kenyon College in 2005. His purpose is to make the audience aware of our ‘default-setting’ of thinking. His ability to connect with his audience via word choice and the examples of everyday life he provides, proves his speech to be effective.…

When comparing the commencement speech given by Steve Jobs at Stanford University in 2005 to the commencement speech given by Barak Obama at Wesleyan University in 2008, one can argue that Steve Jobs’ address has a stronger use of the rhetorical situation and the rhetorical appeals. Jobs’ ability to combine ethos, pathos and purpose proves his credibility, builds a relationship with the audience, and helps students believe in their intuitions. In his 2005 commencement address to Stanford University, Steve Jobs incorporates ethos to prove his credibility to his audience. He begins by admitting that “[he] never graduated from college” (1).…

Final Persuasive Speech Reflection Believe me when I say that my progress from then to now has come a long way. Initially after giving the persuasive speech, I felt that there has been little process in all of this time that I had spent trying to learn to communicate more effectively. Worst of all perhaps, I felt powerless to do anything to change this. This was my most practiced speech and it did not feel that way. Even the thought of having to go back and essentially relive those 7 minutes was not something I was particularly excited about.…
