My Decision To Become An Educator

During our principalship course, we had a very passionate discussion about how some of our colleagues perceive teachers that go through Teach for America or any alternative certification process for that matter. Some of my colleagues appear to be very bias in terms of qualifications and commitment of these particular teachers. I would have to respectfully disagree with them and perhaps I may as well be bias due to the route I chose to take to become an educator. Ten years ago, I chose to make the biggest decision in my life and that was to become a teacher. And the way I went about obtaining my certification at that time was through an alternative certification program offered by Rockford University. During my first year, I had an assigned mentor, a golden teacher’s mentor assigned by CPS, principal, and assistant principal that visited me often. My mentor, Len Dominguez, a retired CPS principal, assigned by Rockford University visited me once a week and took copious notes that I still have till this day. In retrospect, I can see tremendous amount of professional growth throughout my years as a teacher. My principal at the time, Dr. Carlos Azcoitia would also come in and observe my teaching once a week, but I never received any written feedback from him. I always wondered what he thought. Because of these experiences and the preparation that I obtained from this alternative certification program, I am where I am today—from a middle school science teacher to an instructional coach at a high school and now in route to obtain a second masters in school leadership. I haven’t dropped out or intend on doing …show more content…

In the news article, New York’s Bad Teachers, Back on the Job, Marc Sternberg authenticates his credibility by making reasonable claims and backing them up. Sternberg claims “Forcing hundreds of these [unmotivated] teachers upon schools this fall... will weaken school accountability, damage staff morale... and undermine the educational gains students have been making...” This assertion is supported by personal experience and statistics gathered during his time as the founding principal of Bronx Lab School. Sternberg recalled that “by 2008, 86 percent of Bronx Lab students graduated with more than 350 college acceptances and $2.5 million in financial aid in hand” thanks to the dedicated teachers he hired. There are so many students out there in low-income communities who do not know what it is like to have someone who wants to see them succeed, someone who wants to see them achieve regardless of their race or economic status. I seek to join Teach for America for many reasons and three of those reasons are; for one, I want to help make a difference in the lives of students, I want the students that I encounter to know that I care about their education, I want to see them succeed and I want them to know that I have very high expectation of them. Secondly, growing up in a low-income community myself, I can relate to these students. I want my students to know that just because they are currently living in an underserved community, it does not mean…

Ethics is the broad theme of ISLLC Standard 5. The activities related to this standard provided me with a means to reflect on my personal code of ethics, explore ethics from the perspective of a district official, and to hear others’ perspectives of ethics in the school organization. The first activity allowed me to interview Richard Stiverson, a school board member, regarding his code of ethics. The interview was insightful and did not veer far from what I consider to be ethical. With regard to this activity, I was able to grasp the notion that ethical behavior is paramount to building and maintaining trust in an organization.…
