Many of us have wonderful memories from growing up that include being out in the great outdoors. There’s something magical about hiking a mountain on a beautiful day, roasting marshmallows by the fire with your friends, or descending deep into a cool and dark cave. These are the experiences that State High’s Outing Club gives to its members.

The club plans several trips a year for members to go backpacking, day-hiking, orienteering, rock-climbing, camping, caving, and more. Along the way, members also learn essential outdoor survival skills like fire-starting. Every school year wraps up with a culminating three-day expedition to the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia.

“We don’t get that extreme on school trips of course, but sharing that excitement with students of similar interests is a joy and a privilege.”

Maggie Jaenicke ’17, is the Outing Club President and has been a member for three years. She enjoys sharing her love of the outdoors with her friends and says she has learned more ways to start a fire than she will ever need.

“Before I joined, I got the sense that outing club was full of people looking for adventure around every corner,” she said. “That assumption has been proven correct.”

During her time with the club, Jaenicke’s appreciation for nature has continued to grow. She also cherishes time spent creating memories with her friends.

“My favorite part of Outing Club is spending prized moments with my friends: late nights cooking food around a tiny camp stove and early mornings waking up to see the orange sunrise,” said Jaenicke.

Each year there are about 50 members in the Outing Club, with members participating in some or all of the trips. Seasoned members and advisors often loan gear to newer members, giving students a chance to hit the trail without spending a lot of

Once I turned six, my parents sent me to Camp Wanakita for the first time, which was the origin of one of the most important parts of my life. Although the earliest few years, I needed some persuading to return to camp, I nonetheless believe that, if the opportunity presents itself, all children should go to Wanakita, because of the opportunities for unique friendships, the setting conducive of a connection to nature, and an environment that encourages the development of new skills. Perhaps the most important reason why all children should go to Wanakita is the formation of friendships at camp. The camp songs and traditions encourage a sense of camaraderie between campers which is vital to the creation of good friendships. Another reason why camp is a good place to make friends is…

Cicadas Camp Cornhusker, ‘the happiest place on earth’ as many people call it, including myself. There is so much to see and do, hiking in the thick bristled woods to hear the water crash at Angel's or Devil’s falls, to canoe at Lake Abel where the breeze gives a sense of freedom, and to be around a crazy group of staff members. As staff members, we do a lot of crazy things, for starters we work at a boy scout camp. But whether it’s staying up late to hug a windmill off of camp property of even trying the food combinations that the kitchen has us try, everything is a blast. For me though, my favorite thing to do was to pull pranks on the other guys, especially when it involves the seventeenth anniversary of cicadas.…

I began college with an idea that I enjoyed the physical and social sciences. After taking archaeology and geology, I fell in love with both and learned that I could combine the two disciplines in a variety of careers. Geology has such a wide range of topics and career concentrations and this drew me to the profession. Geoarchaeology has been my focus over the past few years, but my interests have extended to soil health and geological disaster mitigation. Before any of this can be studied, one must have a deep understanding of the processes of the Earth and how this can influence what we see today.…

The moment I heard about the club from the announcements that it was about competing in science I wanted to be a part of the group. The science Olympiad does a lot of things; engineering, Earth science, physical science, and a lot of other subjects. I like science for a lot of reasons. First, science is exciting because it holds a lot of interesting information about Earth, for example, building bridges, bottle rocket, and green generation. Second, science describes how molecules work together, and how to save the environment from many hazards, so when I learn about these objects that helps me to enjoy my free time.…
