Special Education Classroom Observation

I did all of my observations with Mrs. Bowmann in the afternoons, and one morning, while she had her students within the special education classroom. I observed around the same time each time I went it so I was able to see the routine the students went through. I also got the opportunity to observe the students aid within the classroom as well as follow the special education students to art class to participate in an inclusion setting with their other peers. I was able to speak one on one with the teacher about her students, and what it is like to teach such a wide range of kids. She had 7 students in her room, with one of the students being completely blind. Of the other students, their progression within the curriculum was all different, …show more content…
I was able to observe what it was like for the students to leave the special education classroom, with the aid, and enter the inclusive setting with other kids in their grade. It was very interesting to see how the kids communicated with others not in their particular class, and how they interacted back. The art teacher was a first year teacher who worked well with the kids from Mrs. Bowmanns class and individualized their work to fit their needs. They were held to the same expectations as the other students, but they also received extra time within their normal classroom to finish up projects or to have Mrs. Bowmann help them submit assignments online, since Lakota just began using Canvas at the high school level. This was interesting to see how the students were able to still be required to complete the same work, in order to not limit their abilities, as well as to make it work best for them rather than them falling behind and

    Even though Mrs. B wasn’t a part of the dry erase sentence classroom activity, she was helping the students review on their learning in the back of the classroom.
