College Speech: Reflection In The First Day Of Speech

Reflection I remember going to the College advisor and trying to figure out what class I would be taking for the fall semester of 2016. I was a little late in the enrollment process and some of the classes I wanted to take were either not available or completely filled. So my advisor asked me if I would be interested in taking speech class. I thought to myself “I don’t really like talking in front of people but it is a requirement.” So I signed up for Introduction to Speech Communication (10116) and that is where this reflection starts. The first day of class was a little intimidating. We started with nine students all from different backgrounds and diversity. It seems like it such a long ago but it was only 12 weeks. I started to write a speech about the death of the coral reefs, but I found it had too much information on the subject. I was so difficult for me to complete because I was an expert of coral reefs. So I finally through that topic out and choose to do a speech on Scuba diving. Which I am no expert, but I do have some knowledge about the subject. The week of October 6 I was supposed to being giving my speech on Scuba diving but due to work I was sent to Jacksonville Florida to aid the team during Hurricane Matthew. I heard everyone did very well on the speeches and I am sorry I missed them. The second major assignment that we had during that portion of class was the interview. We started with a presentation in the library teaching the class the “do’s and don’ts” of writing a resume and how to conduct yourself in an interview. We were assigned to make a resume for a specific job that was chosen by the class. The job that was chosen by our group was a receptionist position at the Lower Keys Medical Center. We weren’t able to make stuff up on our resume and it was difficult to find correlations between my work history and a receptionist. So I did my best and the next week we conducted mock interviews. We had to come up with questions to ask as an interviewer and be interviewed for the position. I felt that over all the class did very in both

It didn’t help that I was also participating in a new program for the school and only a small amount of people were joining. The 21st Century Program was supposed to introduce a technology based learning environment. I wasn’t sure if the program was going to help improve my literacy skills or make them worse, but I had to take the risk and find out the results. The first day of school always made me feel as if I had butterflies in my stomach, dying a little bit on the inside not knowing how my year was going to go. Entering English class, the sight of the teacher, a few students already in their seats, I sat in the desk nearest to the teacher, she seemed kind, sharing a big smile as more students arrived.…

Good public speaking skills are rare, it takes a lot of practice and experience to express yourself fluently in front of a crowd. To me, a great public speaker is one who can put their words together in the simplest way possible, so that every spectator can understand the message. Also engaging with the audience in order to keep their attention. The last good speech I heard was by Congressmen John Lewis back in October here on campus, he had great stories, was very informative and didn’t hesitate to engage the audience. I would be bothered if a political candidate used profanity in the middle of a speech because it is extremely unprofessional, I would not want that person to represent me or my community.…

My first college undergraduate course was Introduction to Communication Disorders. In this class I fell more in love with communication disorders and in the classes to follow I was happy with my decision to become a future SLP.…

Thinking and unfolding crumpled papers from my first three years here, I remember how horrific and terrifying the first day was. I specifically remember taking deep breaths in and out as the bus unloaded all the students. Before I had gotten on the bus, my mother stood on the porch outside, and I blew at least three kisses to her as I walked down the driveway, and she blew one last kiss to me before I turned around to hop up the steep stairs. By the middle of the day, I began to cry and tried to sneak out to the bathroom. I was crying because I had missed my mom, and the four hours I had been there were far too long.…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. Although other species may have audible forms of communication, man is able to record and document his thoughts, feelings, or events that have unfolded in a way that can be viewed multiple times without him having to use his voice over and over. The teacher made me introduce myself and told me to sit down. I felt like I was a deer being stared down by a bunch of hungry beasts. The other students already had cliques established, and no one seemed to jump out of the social construct to say hi. The class proceeded as a normal class would, with lecture followed by questions. The bell rang for lunch time, the students ushered out, and into the cafeteria like wild animals.…
