Graduation Speech: Poverty In The United States

Thank you for allowing me address you today. I’m deeply honored to be here. I’m here to bring attention to a worldly problem that seems to be increasing. First, let me begin by saying that being honest and saying that I’m biased in regards to this topic because I do live in poverty. Despite this, I believe that is our responsibility to address poverty, as it affects us in one way or another. Whether it is because many of our ancestors and families came to this country fleeing crop failures, land and job shortages, rising taxes, and famines, or because it affects us personally, or because we can clearly see the effects of poverty in human trafficking, terrorism, and children. As politicians, your responsibility is to enable the country to move forward in the best way possible, especially by stimulating the growth of its most vulnerable citizens. Poverty contributes to things such as human trafficking, because some families facing economic desperation sell off their children into this business, and some are mislead by the traffickers by promising higher paying jobs. Terrorism is also fueled by poverty. Many people who don’t have much opportunity, use terrorism as means to provide to their families, and as a way to retaliate against those in power because of their social conditions. Consequently, then by addressing poverty we will also be addressing other threats to our society. Poverty and the struggle of the middle class was prevalent issue in our past election, and this helped propel the win of our current President. Obviously, I’m not the only one who believes that this is an issue, fellow Americans also believe this. Creating jobs is a solution to this, but I believe that similarly investing in education, reforming the criminal justice system, and supporting pay equity can help us reduce poverty
