The Values of the Athenians in the Hospital: Florence Nightingale In "My Graduation Speech," Neil Postman, an author and professor at New York University, asserts that the values and ideas originated by two ancient groups over 2,500 years ago still survive and influence us today. In his essay, Postman presented the Athenians and the Visigoths, the former virtuous and creative, and the latter crude and careless, with the suggestion that we all "must be on one side or the other. " We owe the Athenians and their value of "beauty, reason, and moderation" much of the art, literature and language within the world today. They cherished knowledge, valued social restraint, and took interest in public affairs. Florence Nightingale, the founder of…

After coming a long distance from Richmond, Virginia to Washington D.C, my destination was reached. Just by gazing at the deep-rooted bricks and the old cream-colored columns, I knew this was the right place to be. Strolling into the revived Ford’s Theatre and looking at the waxed mannequins it feels like you are travelling back into the 1860’s. I was already amazed by observing all of the various artifacts and depictions and trying to figure out which attraction would interest me the most to record. Since Ford’s Theatre is a very popular site and has many fascinating facts behind it, The assassination of Abraham Lincoln was the most impressive exhibit to me.…

Throughout reading “Commencement Speech, Kenyon College”, I found this short story very inspiring to read as I found myself doing more research on this essay because I was so interested in it. Reading this once through I got the feeling of more of a pessimistic and lower toned feeling sine suicide is mentioned and reading the bio notes of David Foster Wallace and how he suffered with depression and committing suicide I realized this was more of a final speech of what he wished he could have still in himself. “It’s the matter of my choosing to do the work of show how altering or getting free of my natural, hardwired default-settling” (309) I believe in this statement with my whole heart, to me I believe that I used to get just go through the motions of life and wasn’t really living but recently one of my friends came to me and told me she wanted to kill herself because she didn’t see the point in life and though I don’t know if I ever could get to that point, I told her that every day we would hang out, every day we would make the most of everyday and every day I would remind her why life was so wonderful to live and how lucky we are for this opportunity.…

In this world today, there are those who greet the day with zeal and zest, but also those who do so with only ever weary and pessimism. In his commencement speech at Maharishi University of Management, dated May 24th, 2014, Jim Carrey strives to inspire the graduates of class 2014 to go out into the world with vigor and ardor. He speaks with the intention and mindset to praise and extol the graduates, as a commencement speaker generally will. We learn a little bit more about the audience by understanding Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the university’s founder, with his message conveying the purpose of life was the development of happiness, and acknowledgement that everyone possessed the ability to unlock limitless potential(Mum.edu). In addition to adding more into the background about the University, Carrey spoke out that Maharishi University was a place for teaching the theory, in which knowledge and experience were necessary for productivity in life.…

Some requirements of the Secretary of State include, serving as the President's principal adviser on U.S. foreign policy, conducts negotiations relating to U.S. foreign affairs, and advises the President regarding the acceptance, recall, and dismissal of the representatives of foreign governments, just to name a few. My candidate, Thomas Jefferson, is perfect for this job, because of his previous dealings with foreign affairs, Government experiences, and he is very diligent. Hi Karrin, Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me this morning. Not great news and a hard pill to swallow, but none the less a lesson and coach able moment for myself. As stated on our call I fully respect the decision of the team over at the SF Giants and if anything I would like them to know that there was no misrepresentation or additional information on my resume that in fact was not accurate in the moment. At the end of the week last week while I was completing my enrollment for my program/schools I was given the information that credits were or were not transferable.…

Over the course of my entire life, and the events that I have gone through, one thing has become quite evident. I have learned that my actions as a human being directly correlate to the type of person that I am. For instance, when a person learns something at a young age, their mind grows on this idea and they learn how to act. As a child I could distinctly remember an instance where my actions affected the person who I am now. Before I think of doing something or expressing what I would like to say, I know that my actions have consequences.…
