It’s safe to say that our new principal, Gary Kalish, has started to feel a more comfortable in our little school, especially on the dance floor at homecoming! This is the first full school year GHS will have Mr.Kalish as its principal! Starting even before his time here, things as Greenport High School have been changing. In a recent interview Mr.Kalish was asked deeper questions, clarifying some questions that have been floating around this year. Here at Greenport Advanced Placement (AP) courses are not weighted. Over the years, this has caused both teacher and student conflicts. The teachers feel like they might have to take things slower to ensure every student passes the intensive college level course and the students resist joining such classes because they know that it will be challenging and no weighted grade is there to assure them. Will GHS start weighting grades? And what is the reason that you are changing/keeping this policy?

“That’s a question that has a lot of different things to consider, and it isn’t something that I take lightly. Certainly if this is an issue the district is looking into it isn’t an answer that can be found with one person. As people are concerned with the issue of weighting grades the way to attack the issue would be to first, take a look at what

Would I say that I am one-hundred-percent pleased with all the class sizes? No. I recognize that some of them are stretched and we’ve been making adjustments to ensure that academic classes are reasonable for the teacher and if they do get large enough we are able to add teaching aids to support the classroom. With that being said student enrollment is something that we don’t control. There of course are some classes that I am not entirely pleased with but the faculty has been extremely flexible and creative in maintaining a positive environment for

An analysis of educational leadership reveals one of the many challenges facing a principal is the development of the school’s value system. The rituals of the school often demonstrate to the students, staff and community what the school values as important. The principal is often the leader of these rituals and they reaffirm the values of the school through what they attend to (Deal & Peterson, 1994, p. 30). Thus, the principal becomes a symbol of what to value and believe in.…

In this article the author, Erickson, discusses the practice of teachers basing student’s grades off of their averages. The topic of the article explains it all, “How Grading Reform Changed”, this article discusses just that. According to Erickson, he suggests that grading reforms at Minnetonka High School led to a change in the way the school system worked. It fundamentally altered how teachers graded, and how students approached their learning. What automatically catches my attention is the example the author gave in relation to the topic.…

The reason I chose to weigh Seraphina’s Promise, chapter quiz 25/25 is because this assignment is based on the student’s ability to listen, comprehend, and answer questions pertaining to the text through a paper test. The book will be read orally, chorally, or listened to via audio and the students will work with a partner to answer the questions. Therefore, I feel that this style of assignment should be worth a smaller percentage of the student’s grade.…

Through the history and evolution of education, mentors have struggled over the best way to challenge their students to reach their peak. Although there are countless methods that have been debated and finessed, the use of the traditional grading scale seems to be a large source of current disputes. Some teachers argue that such a fixed system of testing and ordering pits students against each other, creating an air of competition that should not exist in the classroom. It gives a child a number and tells them how “good” they are. Other educators say that this is not necessarily detrimental.…

Some people believe that standardized testing in America has a very positive impact on a student’s education and performance, however, others believe that standardized testing causes “important but untested content to be eliminated from the curriculum” (Popham). In discussions of standardized testing, one controversial issue has been whether high-stakes testing improves or diminishes student learning in a classroom. On one side of the argument, Latasha Gandy argues that children “can and must take the tests so we know if they’re mastering the critical skills they are learning from great teachers and great classes, skills they’ll need to pursue the college and career of their dreams”. While, on the other hand, Robert Schaefer of the National…

Not getting enough class time to ask questions? Well that is why I think high school classes are too big. We never get enough one on one with the teachers, so if you're not understanding the lesson then you have to try and figure it out yourself. We don’t get enough one on one because everyone else is playing around and not paying attention, so that leads to no one learning anything. No one learns anything because no one is paying much attention, because everyone is talking and not even acknowledging the teacher and that she is trying to teach a lesson.…

Some states, are using funds from the Class Size Reduction Program to turn low academic performing schools around by reducing classes. The idea that reducing class sizes can lead to enhanced teaching and learning is one most people would freely support. If one were given a choice between a small classes of 20 students versus 30 students, would there be a dispute that the larger class of 30 students would be a more enhanced in the learning environment for knowledge. In a smaller classroom, a teacher would have time to get to know their student's better and learn their strengths and weaknesses. Also, in a small classroom environment it may take less time to manage the classroom, which means the teacher could spend more time teaching and helping students with…

Some use weighted, and others do not. Even the weighted systems are inconsistent as there is not a regulation on how many points or how highly the class is valued along with how it should factor into the GPA. Two students at different schools could take the same honors English course, but one could end with a 4.5 GPA while the other could end up with a 5.0 due to the inconsistencies within the GPA system. Weighted GPA systems have both their advantages and disadvantages.…
