Flipping burgers and bagging groceries while in middle or high school may not, at the time, seem like jobs that will lead to the brightest of opportunities and future. However, it is the lessons learned and experiences gained during these trivial jobs during adolescence that can help pave a path to a bright future with many opportunities in different situations such as schooling and higher employment (Mckechine, 2013). There has recently been much debate as to whether or not teenage jobs are truly valuable to teenagers as well as how a job may benefit a teenager in the future. Holding down a job and attending high school can be a challenge for some. Due to this, teens should be encouraged to seek employment during the summer months so they can learn valuable lessons and begin thinking about their future. The amount of information that can be learned, and later applied in life by getting a job over the summer, is endless. It can not be repeated enough that while having a job during the school year, and having an income during the school year, may seem like a good idea, it in fact has negative outcomes on student’s school performance and well-being. With a poor economy it can be hard for teens to find employment, giving up should never being the answer. Those who persevere and are able to find a summer job will have stronger resumes in the future, learned more life skills, and potentially have a brighter future.
