The Importance Of Observation In The Classroom

Improved Essays
Throughout the semester in our education course, students had the opportunity to observe real teachers and classrooms in action. We observed the different set ups, different teaching styles and the diverse students within the classroom. Given ten hours to accomplish, we set sail in each level of teaching. Early Childhood, Childhood, and Middle Child, each a completely different level and certain levels not right for every future teacher. This fieldwork journey helped solidify my passion for the Childhood level, however; it also confirmed my reasons for not liking the other levels. Teaching is such a giving job and only those who have true passion will succeed. The first classroom observed was an early childhood classroom. It was Mrs. McGrath’s Pre-k classroom at St. Marks Lutheran school where I began my observations. The general set up of the …show more content…
McGrath’s classroom. She loves them as her own and they love her back, and that is something needed in a successful classroom. Student behavior was monitored with a behavioral chart with their names on it. The chart contained their names and clothes pins next to them and the object was to not have any next to their name. The relationship between Mrs. McGrath and her students was very clear, she loved them and always encouraged them. For example, every time they remembered or answered something correctly she would say “kiss your brain”. Mrs. McGrath has a very encouraging classroom, which is good for the students because they are still so small. Within her classroom Mrs. McGrath does use cooperative learning and it has to do with the way she set up her tables for learning activities. They all sit in groups of six and feed off one another’s ideas and help one another grow. Mrs. McGrath has set up her classroom and her students for success. I can take a lot from my experience in her room and hopefully apply it to my future

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…

During this phase in my PLE I really thought the teacher focused on the InTASC #3 which is learner environment. I say this because the first thing she did was put the students into a group and then gave them a story to read, and after they read the story they had to collaborate with each of their group members to come up with a question. Then they have to share this with the class so everyone can learn from the question they asked. Once they are done with the questions they are supposed to come up with their own story, this ties in the critical thinking aspect of learning along with more collaboration with the group. After all the groups have worked on their books they are going to take turns going around and each group will read their…

All teachers performed great jobs at creating a unified classroom of learners. The students have favorable moments to act as chiefs and helpmates with individual responsibilities; their jobs are placed in a pocket folder on the wall. Students could participate in classroom activities in a variety of ways. Ms. Atkinson, Bell, Waldoky, and Gullekerson used a rocking chair during their teachable moments. I noticed around the classrooms, the teachers modeled supportive interactions with the students, and encouraged prosocial behavior.…

On Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at approximately 10:15 A.M. I completed my gross motor observation in Mrs. Sayre’s classroom at Breton Downs Elementary school. I observed William, a six-year-old member of the first grade classroom. My observation was done during the classroom exercise time. Gross motor activities that I witnessed were as followed: dancing, jumping, walking, and clapping. William was standing roughly fifteen feet in front of me, eyes looking ahead to the screen as he waited for the substitute teacher to put on the GoNoodle exercise activity.…

I can empathize with teachers who say that the observation and evaluation process does not seem reciprocal in nature. Most of my follow-up evaluations have either been waived or conducted in five minutes or less in which the principal hits upon the highlights of my observation. Very few teaching lessons have been learned through these interactions. In her article though, Shelly Arneson includes sound practices that can be implemented to alleviate many of the concerns of the evaluation process. Her basic premise is to shift the dialogue from inspection-based conversation to a reflection-based conversation.…

Going into my teaching in Clare I already knew a lot about the students because that same classroom is where I do My Pre-Student Teaching. With that said, I tried to be as objective as possible in these observations since I knew that this science placement has different requirements than my Pre-Student Teaching. Being able to objectively observe today and pulling in my observations from other times being in the class, I feel as though I have a greater understanding about the goings on in the classroom. I have the environment memorized, and I know which students have special needs and which ones need extra help; I also understand the classroom rules and developmental levels of the students. Looking around Ms. Babcock’s room she has the students divided into four different tables: Red, Yellow, Green and Blue.…

As I walked into the classroom, I was immediately stuck by the noise. Sounds resonated from every corner of the room in discordant refrain, inflecting a deafening blow on my still-waking ears. “Welcome to morning in Pre-K”, I thought. While soaking up the sound, I followed the secretary who had led me to the classroom to meet the classroom teacher. She looked young and kind, the secretary securing this perception with her stamp of approval, “This is Mrs. Davis.…

    1) While at my observation this past week I learned three valuable lessons. The first lesson that I learned was the importance of structure in a classroom. The teacher for a U.S. history class had planned out a lesson that was both interesting and out of the ordinary. However, with this lesson plan the structure of the class had to be changed. Typically the class was structured with the same type of hook every class period.…
