Hearing my name called through a microphone, I started walking up the stairs, onto the stage where my diploma waited. The piece of paper that signified the end of my high school career. All of the accomplishments and struggles I faced in those four years was acknowledged with this one piece of paper. “Thank you!” I said, shaking hands with the head of school and reaching out for the diploma. I had just finished my morning classes and was walking up the stairs to the 20 minute homeroom period I had with Mrs. Pierson. Upon starting class, Mrs. Pierson began crying, knowing that this was the last year she would have with her girls. 8th Grade Graduation As we sit here today, eagerly waiting to graduate, let’s ask ourselves one simple question. Where would we all have been without teachers today? It’s not just teachers though, it’s the friends we made; the experiences and knowledge that we all gained throughout elementary and middle school too. Even though we are all graduating middle school today, I think I can speak on behalf of my classmates when saying that we all learned so much already.…

Four years ago, I found myself beaming out at the audience at my high school graduation, standing before my friends and family, and accepted the slip of paper I’d been working so hard for the last four years - my high school diploma. As I walked off the stage, I felt almost overwhelming joy at the thought of heading off to the next chapter of my life - college. Growing up I have faced many challenges, from the difficulties of growing up as a young African American man, to coming to terms with my own sexuality throughout high school. I primarily attribute my successes to my mother, an educator herself, who always inspired a culture of learning in my home. I never anticipated finding myself watching those friends who I once shared a stage with, now all graduating college without me.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
