It truly gave the next step towards maturity and figuring out what I want to do with my life. As many of you know I will not be coming back to Newberry College in the Fall. I will be attending the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. I've decided to double major in Political Science/Accounting. To Dr. Surden I will miss coming into your class everyday and always knowing you’re checking for cell phones. By the way I loved the pictures of your puppies you showed us. To Dr. Schweizer I will miss the chats about politics and the great words

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal," were the words once spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. His vision was that one day, “little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” These notions are being regarded in our everyday lives. He spoke with ethos, pathos and logos- appealing to a variety of cultures.…

I’d like to begin by saying congratulations on your acceptance into the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Whether or not you’ve had the chance to tour the campus, I’m confident you’ll walk away learning something new. This tour has been specifically designed by the Multicultural Student Center to help point out resources aimed at creating a more inclusive and safe environment for our incoming students. We’ll make stops at some of the places on campus that have helped foster minority student life. This by no means is an exhaustive list; it’s goal is to highlight some examples that can guide you in the beginning, in hopes of helping you make connections from there.…

President Obama recently announced in a speech at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee, “Community college should be as free and universal in America as high school is today”. Community college in Tennessee is currently tuition free and saves students $3,800 in annual tuition costs as mentioned in the PBS. In the first year that Tennessee offered the tuition free college 57,000 high school seniors signed up for the programs that include counseling and mentors (PBS). Obama’s tuition free community college plan would increase the amount of students that currently attend college. There would be requirements in place to have your tuition waived; you would have have a minimum of 2.5 GPA and would have to be at least a half-time…

Thank you for everything you have done for me throughout my high school career. I feel fortunate to have had you for both biology and anatomy. I remember our 4th quarter project freshman and junior year. In biology, I had to research a career that interested me and present it to the class. During this project, I discovered I was interested in becoming a nurse anesthetist.…

I just came from a NAACP meeting, we discussed the horrors of lynching, how it took so many innocent and young black lives from families and friends. This is all because of the color of our skins, not the amount of knowledge we hold. I have been apart of this group for as long as I can remember. The National Association of the Advancement of Colored People, was founded in 1909, right in the heart of New York City. Unlike Booker T. Washington, who urged black people to accept segregation, the NAACP desired to make whites aware of the need for racial equality, we want to be noticed politically and socially as equal people.…

I do not know my own name. And yet the sea of people standing before me continue to chant it. All I can make out is a grey rumble, for the never ceasing banging in my bones is the sole object of my constant focus. I am almost there. The banging is a persistent beast, but I hope to overcome its power in a meek matter of months.…

The Passion Speech was to choose something that I was passionate about. I was required to write an essay about someone or something I am passionate about. The essay had to be 300-650 words long. Additionally, I had to give a 3-5 minute speech that could include a PowerPoint or a slideshow. I was expected to give good eye contact, effective visual aids (if I wanted), a controlled volume, and energy during my speech.…

As a resident of the city of Ithaca, New York for the past 19 years, I have had many great experiences in this “collegetown”. Ithaca is unique in that we are surrounded by greenery everywhere and are in the backyard of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the five Finger Lakes. We are becoming more farm-friendly for produce and we are always conscientious about sustainable development. This fall, Cornell University released a report outlining its plan to become carbon neutral by 2035, a huge step in making the planet great again. By making sure our campus isn’t emitting lots of carbon in the atmosphere, we are removing one of the major contributions to increased climate change.…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
