Instead I was waiting to be called into a room. Little did I know I was about to hear those three dreaded words, the words no person ever wants to hear ‘You have cancer’. Everything around me stopped for a brief second while I sat trying to comprehend what was happening.…

The World Health Organization states that in the year of 2030, this statistic will grow to 21.4 and 13.2 million respectively (Fanghua, 2010, p.297). But, what is cancer. Cancer is a disease caused by non-stop division of cells and it can happen almost anywhere in the human body. A year or so ago, I sought advice from my lovely daughter about the best way to address our concerns and make positive impact on our son’s life, who is at his teen now. My daughter, heartily explained what I could do right to guide my son and where I could go wrong, as she had have experienced during her teen age. I am so glad that I had the conversation, it made me realize that we (the immigrant parents) are further apart in our upbringing than that of our first generation children, it is literally an ocean apart than one could imagine. These differences could not only stir up annoyance but can also become a major cause of frustration due to the communication gap that exists within us.…

I, being so young, suffered from nightmares and anxiety due to witnessing all the pain he had to go through. After brain surgery, radiation, and many sessions of chemotherapy the doctors had told us he was now in remission and the cancer was at a minimum. A short three months went by and we had many great memories including my mother and stepfather having their wedding they had planned long before cancer interrupted.…

Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
